The First Blush of the Blue Lotus
What is a blue lotus? Is it a real flower? Why yes, it is! Originally popular in Eygpt, it may have been found along the Nile and other parts of East Africa. It is thought to have then spread to South Asia and found its way into the artwork of Tibet.
In Tibetan Buddhist iconography there are many stylized variations of the Blue Lotus. Within this tradition, the lotus is one of the 8 auspicious symbols and is understood to represent the enlightened mind.
The lotus emerges through the mud at the bottom of the pond, yet it appears pristine on the surface of the water. Just as the mind of pure awareness appears in the world unstained by worldly conditions.
This pointillist painting depicts a blue lotus flower floating on the surface of the water. The title refers to the slightly pink hue of its reflection in the pond. Suggesting the lotus blushes upon seeing its own reflection and realizing the truth of its nature.
May all beings ultimately know the truth of our Divine nature, embracing understanding with humility. Namaste.
